Receiving Anointing of the Sick
“ Is any one among you suffering? Let him pray. Is any cheerful? Let him sing praise. Is any among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord; and the prayer of faith will save the sick man, and the Lord will raise him up; and if he has committed sins, he will be forgiven.” - Epistle of St. James 5:13-15
Anointing of the Sick is a Sacrament that is for the healing of the baptized (first for spiritual healing and if it serves God’s purpose, physical healing is also possible) who have a physical ailment that makes death a possibility. It should be sought by Catholics who are in danger of death, who are to undergo surgery that will require general anesthesia, for those with a terminal illness, and for those suffering the ravages of old age. The Anointing of the Sick must be administered by a priest and, if the person is able, should be preceded by the Sacrament of Reconciliation..
