Parish Choir Letter (updated 8/12/22)

Choirs

The parish choirs are composed of children and adults who assist with the worship life of the parish singing over a hundred liturgies every year and performing in the Parish Music Series.  We are always adding new voices to our program; if you are interested in joining one of our choirs, please contact Mr. Oliveros.

9:00am Sung Mass

We currently have two ensembles for our youth singers; St. Augustine and St. Cecilia. The St. Augustine (for children in grades 3-6) and St. Cecilia (7-12) choirs alternate singing for the 9am mass, as well as rotating to sing for major occasions throughout the year such as Holy Week, Easter Sunday, and an Advent Lessons and Carols Service. The St. Cecilia Choir, while primarily functioning as a mixed choir, will on occasion sing as gendered ensembles of boys and girls.

In addition to building vocal and musical skills, fostering teamwork, and experiencing a vast treasury of sacred music, the parish youth choirs utilize a chorister training program from the Royal School of Church Music called Voice for Life through which singers work toward specific level objectives to earn medals. The RSCM supports a worldwide network of over 8,000 churches, schools, and individuals. It is committed to achieving the best use of quality sacred music in liturgy through education, training, publications, advice, and encouragement. To earn medals, singers must display mastery of the workbook objectives and successfully complete written and sung exams administered by the Director of Music.

11:00am Principal Mass

The Adult Choir provides music for the 11:00am Sunday Mass and consists of highly skilled volunteers of high school age (10th grade) and older who learn music quickly and are interested in enhancing the worship of God through singing the Sacred Rites of the Holy Roman Catholic Church. No audition is required, but no be cognizant of the fact that we sing a large amount of repertoire and it helps if you can match pitch and read music.

Joining our choirs

Participation in providing music for the Mass is a liturgical ministry akin to service at the altar. It requires a serious commitment of time and effort. We would love to have you with us if you discern a call to serve the church in this way. Please contact Mr. Oliveros, Director of Music, if you would like to join this ministry.
